One BIG Reason I Probably Won’t Follow You On Twitter

Twitter is my happy place. I tweet to meet new friends, keep up with old friends, and help connect people. Those are my priorities.

I love to engage. To me, that’s what twitter is all about and if you’re missing that, you’re missing the absolute treasure twitter can be whether you use it for business or pleasure.

I have a lot of followers right now and I’m sure that if I followed everyone who follows me, I could have more. But I’m picky. I don’t want to miss anyone so I have one big thing I look for when someone follows me.

So here it is:  Do you talk to other people?

If I click into your profile and see only broadcast tweets and no engagement, I won’t follow you no matter what you’re tweeting. I’m not on twitter to buy anything. I’m on twitter to get to know people so I can have coffee with a friend anywhere I go in the world.

If you aren’t on twitter to talk to people, get to know them, you are seriously missing the best part of the twitter experience, in my opinion. I have learned so much and come to know so many cool people. How in your life could you do this if not for twitter?

So go for it. As my twitter friend @LizStrauss said the other day:

I dare you. 🙂

#winning

winning

This past weekend, I was going through my email and was directed to Brian Hawkins’s blog.  He was having a contest to find a book to read on the new Nook he got for Father’s Day.

You know I’m very competitive and I love contests. I also love to WIN!

The rules of the contest were to pitch a book that would interest Brian. He didn’t want a fictional story but wanted one that fit into his interest groups of blogging, business and social media. He wanted to be able to download it onto his Nook and said that the first person to convince him would win their choice of book.

I actually love reading more than I love contests, if you can believe that, so I really wanted to win and I had just the book.

I pitched Think Like a Rock Star from Mack Collier. It’s a great book that I was lucky to read in galley form (but finally got in hard copy so I can write in it) and have been recommending ever since.

Here’s my pitch to Brian:

I won! I was so excited. I told Mack to give a look to the comments on Brian’s blog and look what Mack did:

Isn’t that fun! I love it!

I’m super excited that I won the book from Brian. Thank you, Brian! And I’m also excited he gets to read Mack’s awesome book and actually get a signed copy from Mack himself. 🙂

I’m looking forward to getting my own book signed when I meet Mack in real life at Y’all Connect in a couple of weeks.

And that folks, is some of the beauty of social media. 🙂

Mad skillz – EATS FIRE

logo-linkedin

I remember the first couple of times I got an endorsement on Linkedin. The new kind of endorsement where you just have to check a box easy-peasy and you don’t have to give any great thought to being a perceived hero in someone’s life. I was flattered. “Oh, thank you!”, I tweeted to the person who did the grand and glorious act of kindness and insight.

At that time, I wasn’t very familiar with Linkedin and didn’t realized they had changed things to make this a pretty easy process that doesn’t require much time.

Now, though, it’s a different story. I’m always stumped when people I don’t know, but with whom I’ve connected  on Linkedin, endorse my skills. How do they know these things about me when I’ve never done business with them or, in fact, interacted with them at all past agreeing to connect with them?

If I add “Fire Eating” to my skills, how long do you think it will be before someone endorses me for that? Social media, marketing, fire eating. My skill level is all the same when you don’t know me, right? 😉

fireeater

I am starting to think that people whom I don’t know have ulterior motives for endorsing me. i.e. They expect me to return the favor. Today, I received an inbox message from a guy who has been endorsing me the last couple of weeks asking me to do just that which confirms this. But I don’t know him!

I think these endorsements are so ridiculous and unimportant that after I read this article I just went in and shut them off. So, if you DO decide to endorse me for eating fire, sadly, my future employer (nor anyone else) will never see it.

I love the idea of the written endorsements offered at Linkedin. If I worked with someone and I knew their abilities and was incredibly impressed with them, it’s nice to know there is a spot there where I can write something to that effect and have it stand out on their profile. I believe that these endorsements have real value and if someone asked me or I felt compelled to write one, I would.

Until then, I’m going to go eat some fire.

To those of you whom I know that have endorsed me, I do appreciate and thank you. I just don’t put a lot of stock in Linkedin endorsements as you can see. 🙂

Unfriend Yourself

I got the book Unfriend Yourself by Kyle Tennant and read it this past weekend. It’s not a long book and I was actually finished with it early on Friday but decided to go ahead and take the challenge to unfriend myself for three days on social media.

Unfriend Yourself

The book is interesting and poses some intriguing questions on how we use social media. Tennant also lines up social media usage with Scripture. Thought provoking.

What I got from this book, other than the challenge of staying off of social media for three days, was confirmation that I’m doing it right. At least according to the book.

I love social media and I love the people I have met through twitter. My goal in life is to meet my twitter friends and make them into real life friends. I believe that I could have coffee in any part of the world with someone that I “know” from twitter. That’s a cool feeling.

java

As you know, twitter is my favorite in the social media realm. I have found, as the author did, that Facebook can be a little fake. And I’ve found it can also be a little mean. Mostly, I use Facebook to see photos of the #glambaby. And other people’s little kids. The photos of little kids is my favorite part of Facebook.

Tennant says that social media offers a new kind of social and intellectual environment encouraging false intimacy and feigning friendship. I can see how it could be perceived as that if you aren’t being true to yourself or your friends/followers.

If you know me at all, you know I believe in being REAL. With me, what you see is what you get. The person I am on social media is the person I will be when you meet me in real life. I think it could be very easy to try and let yourself be someone you’re not but since my ultimate goal is to meet every one of my followers in person, being real seems more practical to me.

I wrote in my book that I feel that twitter actually allowed me to be the real me. I tweet what I tweet. Then, when people meet me in real life, they expect me to be me and it’s so cool! 🙂

The one person who came to mind when I was reading this book was Afton Fisher. I love Afton and if I had not been on twitter, I am not sure I ever would have met her in real life. She is a wonderful, kind, and precious soul. She’s a fabulous mommy and wife and I love her. For real.

Afton has told me that she practices WWLD. What Would Lauri Do? Ohhhh. Oh. That always gives me pause. It’s constantly in the back of my head that, at least one person that I love and respect completely, is looking up to me. This would keep me real if nothing else did.

Tennant suggests that we make sure not to forgo in life communion with online communication. This is good advice. When I meet my twitter friends in real life I am SO delighted! It’s really the cherry on top of an already good ice cream sundae.

I think that you can use social media and not be used by it. This would be a good goal to have if you feel that you are becoming enslaved by the medium.

All in all, I think this was a good book to read. It gave me some good things to think about but mostly it confirmed that I’m using social media in a way that is well balanced. And that makes me happy.

So? Did I pop into my social media accounts these three days? I did, I cannot tell a lie. I got an email with three direct messages from a friend who wanted me to call her. While I didn’t go into twitter itself, I did see the direct messages in email form. I also logged into Facebook so I could see a photo of my son’s birthday donuts which were cool and also to tell Beth Hoffman that I really love her new book because I couldn’t wait until Monday. Also, I checked into foursquare today. But, for me, mostly I did a great job on the challenge.

I can’t wait for Monday to get back to normal! 🙂

Likeable Business

Likeable BusinessLikeable Business: Why Today’s Consumers Demand More and How Leaders Can Deliver
by Dave Kerpen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book and the concepts it presents. I believe that in this day of social media, it’s important that your company is “likeable”. Dave Kerpen gives examples of companies that are doing it right and how you can make sure that your company does it right. At the end of each chapter are action items to apply to how you run your company.

This is going to be a book I recommend to people who want to understand the impact that social media can have on their business.

It’s also going to be a gift book. I bought it for my son for his birthday! 🙂

Would you want to know?

When I was in 4th grade, we had a spelling bee. The word I misspelled, knocking me out of the competition, was balloon.

balloon

Ultra competitive even way back then, I vowed I would never, ever misspell a word again. Consequently  I’m a really good speller.

Every morning, I make it a point to read different blog posts that come into my email box while I’m sleeping. Something I’ve seen a LOT this week are misspellings. They jump off the page at me.

When I see that, my first reaction is “Oooooh” Then, ::cringe::

And most of the time, that’s it for me. I’m done reading your blog.

This morning, I found a misspelling in a slideshare presentation  The presentation was really well done but I had the same reaction when I found the misspelling. Especially since the presenter referred to the presentation as a “social resume”.

The person also said they like the truth. So, I decided to contact them and let them know about the misspelling. I hope they won’t be offended when my sincere desire is to help.

I would want to know. For sure.

How about you? If I found a misspelling in your blog post, would you want to know?

30 Day Video Challenge

Yesterday afternoon, I was looking through my twitter feed when I saw my friend @jennipps tweet about a 30 Day Video Challenge she was participating in.

jen

I clicked in and thought, “I want to try that, too!”

I love video but, for some reason, I never think to do it first. It’s more something that I remember belatedly. With the minor except of Vine and I still don’t go to that first as would be so much fun.

I posted that I was in, thinking I would have to be a day short as it was already May 1st. And then I realized there was no reason why I couldn’t do a video yesterday even though it was a more “unplugged” version of me than what I usually do.

So my goal for the challenge is to make video be more of a first thought than one somewhere down the road.

Here’s my first video. I’d like to clarify that I’m trying to change my Trophy Wife status by getting a new job and not getting rid of my fabu husband. 🙂

I’m going to @CoffeeCON2013!

And I’m so excited!

I first learned of CoffeeCON last year after my friend Robert Caruso (@fondalo) returned. I checked out the website and made my mind up right then and there that I was going to be there this year. I mean, really, as a coffee achiever, is there a more perfect place for me? 🙂

One of the reasons I’m excited about going is for the coffee, of course. After my trip to Eight O’Clock Coffee, I fulfilled one dream: to learn how to cup coffee.

Cupping Coffee

While I was at Eight O’Clock Coffee, I talked to Glenn quite a bit about roasting coffee beans. It sparked a new dream: to learn how to roast my own coffee. There will be coffee roasters at CoffeeCON that I can talk to and learn more about this. Exciting! 🙂

Coffee Roasters

Although I asked if I really have to go to class, I’m super excited about learning more about different coffee topics. After living in the Middle East, I grew extra fond of Turkish Coffee. I’m very much looking forward to the Turkish Coffee demo I see on the schedule. I have a ton of cardamom pods that are just waiting for something in my cupboard. 🙂

CoffeeCON 2013 Schedule

I will try (really hard) not to be the class clown so we can all learn something.

An absolutely awesome side benefit of attending CoffeeCON is that I get to meet some of my favorite twitter friends in real life! I’m so looking forward to meeting @fondalo, @coffeenate@RAWiesner and @thatsalrighty.

If you’re going to @Coffeecon2013, be sure to look me up and say hi!

Look out Chicago, I’m coming home! 🙂

The Thank You Economy

The Thank You EconomyThe Thank You Economy by Gary Vaynerchuk

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I hesitated for a long time before reading this book. I loved Gary Vaynerchuk’s first book, Crush It!, SO much, I was afraid I’d be disappointed but I was not! This is a great book about how brands need to bring it back to the customer. Incredibly awesome customer service, let them know you care is what he recommends.

I believe that being thankful both personally and professionally is the way to go and The Thank You Economy was a huge confirmation of beliefs I already held. I loved the real life examples of companies, both large and small, who are employing these techniques with resultant booming business.

Thanks for another fabu book, Gary! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in customer service and getting closer to the people who keep you in business.

Think Like a Rock Star

Think Like a Rock Star: How to Create Social Media and Marketing Strategies that Turn Customers into FansThink Like a Rock Star: How to Create Social Media and Marketing Strategies that Turn Customers into Fans by Mack Collier
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh how I loved this book! I was drawn in right from the start as the difference between how rock stars treat their fans and how brands treat their customers was laid out. With terrific, real life examples of how rock stars engage their fans to bring about an amazing, unbreakable connection, Collier gives step-by-step instructions for how you can bring your brand to rock star level. At the end of each chapter, you’ll find a Backstage Pass to help you work your plan. There is a lot of excellent information in this book for brands looking to forge a closer relationship with their customers. I give two thumbs up and rock and roll fingers to Think Like a Rock Star!
