Creative Writing Contest

If you read my blog yesterday, you will know how much I love the library. The other day, I went to the Tulsa Public Library website and saw this:

Creative Writing ContestI had actually seen the same notice last year but it was too late in January when I saw it and I was too busy. But this year, I still have over half a month to prepare my entry.

I’ve written about my list of 100 Goals. Number 85 on that list is: Enter a creative writing contest.

So…

I am polishing up my entry. It’s the same one I would have entered last year so I already knew what I was going to write.

There are four categories:

  • Short Story
  • Children’s Fiction
  • Informal Essay
  • Poetry

Mine entry will be in the Informal Essay category and I will submit it next time I go to the library.

Judging will take place and then there will be an awards ceremony on April 12. I’m excited to actually enter a contest and to be able to cross number 85 off of my list. If I should get a prize, that will just be the cherry on top. 🙂

Storytime with Miss Nha

I started picking up the glambaby on Thursdays back in August. It’s so awesome because I get to spend the whole day with her. We do all kinds of things but one of the things we’ve done since the beginning is Storytime with Miss Nha.

reading

Since reading is one of my favorite things to do, I wanted to teach the glambaby about the library. I checked through the Tulsa Public Library’s events and that’s where I found the Thursday morning event at Nathan Hale Library.

Every week when we would get to the library, the first thing we would do if I had a book to return, is the glambaby would drop the book into the return slot. Then we’d head to the beads.

Playing with beads at the library

After that, it is time for stories! There are little carpets with the letters of the alphabet on them. The glambaby loves the D carpet.

D carpet

There are stories.

Reading stories

And rhymes.

Nursery rhymesAnd bubbles. And songs that have dances with them a lot of the time. At the end, is the all important sticker picking. 🙂

Stickers!

It’s great fun and the glambaby, although she was hesitant at first, eventually started coming out of her shell and really getting involved. The last time we visited, she was slapping her knee in laughter, it was so cute.

Now, in the new year, the glambaby is going to school on Thursdays so we won’t be going to Storytime with Miss Nha anymore.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Miss Nha! Aniston and I had so much fun! 🙂

Cookbook Cookthrough: Everyday Meatloaf and Paleo Apple Muffins

This was the first week for the Paleo Cookbook Cookthrough challenge that I decided to do and I chose one main dish recipe and a muffin recipe.

The first recipe I made was the Everyday Meatloaf. It is DELISH!

Everyday Meatloaf

I used fresh basil as called for in the recipe and it’s very basil-y which I love. I have seen the recipe on the Everyday Paleo site and it used dried basil which would be great in a pinch. But if you have the opportunity for the fresh basil, use it!

I mixed the meatloaf in the Kitchen Aid and, while it looked like it was completely mixed, there was a part of the finished loaf that had a concentration of almond flour. Next time, and there will be a next time, I’ll mix it all with my hands like it says to in the recipe.

I served the meatloaf with roasted garlic green beans which are a favorite here.

Uh-MAZING cold! I adore cold meatloaf and David and i were fighting over the leftover cold pieces. This is a great recipe!

Yesterday, I tried the Paleo Apple Muffins.

Paleo Apple Muffins

I did cut the recipe in half because there are just two of us. I know from experience, that if something is good, we have no restraint. Fresh muffins are best anyway, right? 😉

For paleo muffins, I give it five stars for texture and muffiny-ness. And they were okay tasting. We did eat them. But they are not very sweet. I expected them to be just a little more special. I will for sure make them again because when you’re eating paleo, sometimes you really want some bread and these would fill that need nicely. However, I think I’ll try adding some dates or stevia or something to make them just a little sweeter.

Next week, I’m planning to try Marvelous Meatballs and Brussels Sprouts N Bacon. I scored some beautiful Brussels sprouts at the new Sprouts Farmers Market grand opening and I can’t wait to eat them! 🙂

A Cupping We Will Go

I have no idea how I landed on the Topeca Coffee website towards the end of last year but there I was. And I discovered that they hold a free cupping session on the first Friday morning of each month. Since that was coming up in a few days, I excitedly signed up for it.

As the marketing director of 21st Sensory, Inc. for three years, I am very familiar with the sensory analysis of foods, beverages (other than coffee) and personal care products. And that is where I first heard about coffee cupping from one of our ingredient salesman friends.

I knew then, being the coffee achiever that I am, that cupping coffee is something I for sure wanted to do someday and before my Topeca experience I had the chance one other time.  It was interesting and exciting to actually see how they determine which are the good coffees.

I knew what to expect when I got to Topeca’s Roastery.

Topeca Coffee Roastery

When I walked in, I felt like I had entered Lauri’s Playground. 🙂

Cupping Lab

First we me Ian Picco, Topeca’s Director of Coffee. Is that NOT the BEST title? He took us on a tour of the Roastery.

Roastery Tour

He explained how their entire process works from shipping, roasting, packaging and shipping back out.  I told David we could fill up one of our empty rooms at the house with one of these beauties. 😉

Coffee Roaster

Then we saw where the beans are stored, in a climate controlled space, until they are ready to be roasted.

Climate Controlled Storage

The bags are pretty!

Coffee Beans

Then we finally got to do the cupping. This was so interesting and I learned so much. I am a big fan of Sumatran coffee. When Ian said that he expects to taste spicey notes, like green pepper and radish, in a good Sumatran bean I had never heard of that before. But I was able to pick it out knowing I should be on the lookout for it.

The beans were ground and boiling water poured over them.

Getting the coffee ready for cupping

We went around and smelled all of the different beans and then when they cooled down, we did the actual tasting of them. This involves taking a puddle of coffee into the spoon and doing a strong slurp to aspirate the coffee over the entire mouth so you hit all of your taste buds. Since you taste differently in different parts of your tongue this ensures you taste it properly.

When we were finished I decided my two favorites were these.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Sumatra

Which translates to these when I buy them off the shelf or their website.

Topeca Sumatra Silimakuta

Topeca Ethiopia Ardi

Now that the ice is melted, that’s my plan! Thank you so much to Ian and Topeca Coffee for offering this experience. It was fabu! 🙂

If you’d like to do a cupping at the Topeca Roastery, you can click through here to register for the next class. Have fun and happy cupping! 🙂

My Favorite Books of 2013

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts like this one on twitter. Since I often find my next good book on such lists, and I read 87 books last year, I figured I could make my own list. I was going to do a Top Ten but like any good pageant girl, I know that a Top 12 is superior. 😉

Before I start my list I want to tell you that one of my favorite personal mottos is, “Life is too short to read bad books.” So all 87 books I read were good or I wouldn’t have finished them because there are just way too many other books waiting to be read.

So here we go. In no particular order…

Cave Women Don't Get Fat

I read Cave Women Don’t Get Fat towards the very end of the year so when I was thinking of doing this post, it popped into my head immediately. I’ve read probably every book about the paleo lifestyle on the market but I really loved this one because it was geared towards women. It’s written in an easily understandable style and I think it would benefit all women, who want to live healthfully, to read it. Additionally, the author Esther Blum is super nice and it’s been fun to read her newsletter and to engage with her on twitter @EstherBlum.

Think Like a Rock Star

It seems like Think Like A Rock Star was a big part of my life in 2013. I had been on Mack Collier’s email list for a while and when he said his new book was coming out and we might be able to read an advanced copy if we applied to, I jumped right on it. What a GREAT book! In it, Mack talks about how brands should look at how rock stars treat their fans and use it as a tool in how they treat their customers. We all know it would be awesome to have fans, right? Mack also gained a big fan (and friend) in me. I was excited to travel to Birmingham for Y’all Connect and meet Mack in person at what was a terrific conference. Find Mack on twitter @mackcollier.

Looking for MeIf I weren’t such an airhead, I would have also gotten a chance to meet the fabu Beth Hoffman (after I left Birmingham and on my way to Cincinnati) but I got my days mixed up. I read Beth’s first book Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt in 2010 and it remains one of my favorite books of all time.  I was so excited to get Looking for Me into my hands and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a wonderful, heartwarming story that I loved. It also made me really want to visit Charleston and that’s where David and I are planning our 35th anniversary trip in April. Thanks, Beth! Find Beth on twitter @wordrunner.

Killer Ambition

I stumbled across this book when I found that the Huffington Post does book reviews. I thought, “I know Marcia Clark!” When we moved back to the US after living in the Middle East, I was having trouble acclimating. The OJ Simpson trial was on TV so that’s what I did every day. For months. I watched the trial. So, honestly, I feel like I know Marcia Clark.   Killer Ambition got good reviews so I read it. I loved it! It is the third book for Marcia Clark and, although they are about Rachel Knight, they are stand alone stories. After reading this book, I went on to read her other two books and am looking forward to the next one. I’ll admit to being a little star struck when @thatmarciaclark tweeted me. I love twitter!

Seven Deadlies

Oh how I love Ms. Gigi Levangie’s books! And this one was different than the rest. It was kind of twisted. And funny. It totally reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut, an author I enjoyed reading a lot for those very reasons. Seven Deadlies: A Cautionary Tale is a very clever spin on the seven deadly sins as seen through the eyes of a high school girl in Hollywood. Expect to be caught off guard and laugh out loud when you read this book. I also have fun connecting with @GigiLevangie  on twitter. She’s a pretty funny gal, which I more than appreciate!

Secrets of the Southern Belle

I’m a big fan of the Real Housewives shows although I will admit to not having watched the gals from Atlanta. Phaedra Parks, who wrote Secrets of a Southern Belle, is part of the Real Housewives of Atlanta cast. This is a wonderful book which (and please forgive me for sounding like someone’s grandma even if I am) I feel many young women today could benefit from reading! Although I was born and raised in northern Illinois, I found many of the thoughts in this book ones that we’re passed down to me from my mother and grandmother. Excellent book! On twitter @PhaedraParks.

Lowcountry Bombshell

This is another time where I read the second book before the first one. Lowcountry Bombshell is the second in the Liz Talbot Mystery series.  Liz Talbot is a smart and fashion conscious private investigator. I loved this book and read it right on the heels of Looking For Me. Lowcountry Bombshell also takes place in South Carolina. I was already planning a trip to Charleston and this book actually offered restaurant ideas that I’ve added to my list. Although the book is fiction, the restaurants are real! It was fun to read this book and I ordered the first book in the series and it’s on my list to read this year. I’ve also enjoyed connecting with author @susanmboyer on twitter!

The Storyteller

I don’t know why I am always so sure I’m not going to like a book from Jodi Piccoult when that has never been the case. I have, though, picked up her books in the past, read what the story was about and thought, no, not for me. But then I take it and read it and love it. The Storyteller is an incredibly awesome book. I knew, right away, that I would like this one because the subject matter involves the Holocaust, a topic I’ve read much about. I did not want this book to end. When a book is this good, it’s hard for me to put into words just what makes it so. On twitter, @jodipicoult.

Empty MansionsI’ve never been a big fan of history. Oh, I like super old things like the Bible and the history of ancient Egypt but American history? No, thanks. Boring. Except for this book wasn’t boring. Empty Mansions is a cool book about a billionaire industrialist in the early days of America. The book begins with an empty mansion and his youngest daughter. The story of the family is fascinating and extremely interesting. A true American success story. I can no longer say I don’t like American history! Find the author @BillDedman.

Under the Jewelled SkyI have never been to India but I sure hope to visit there one day. I chose to read Under the Jewelled Sky because I thought it would show me what India is like. And it did that. Author, Alison McQueen writes a haunting tale of two generations of an expat family  who are stationed in India. The descriptions of everything from the palace to the refugee camp are so detailed you can see it in your mind’s eye. I liked that they visited, and eventually lived in, Ooty since my cousin’s daughter just finished up an assignment there and I had heard of it before. I’ve connected with @Alison_McQueen on twitter which, as you know, I think is awesome!

Waking Up In HeavenBooks about people who die and have an experience in Heaven are very intriguing to me so the choice to read Waking up in Heaven by Crystal McVea was an easy one. The book is hard to put down and I read it straight through. Awesome (I know I say that a lot but, truly) is a good word to describe her story. Again, I connected on twitter with @CrystalMcvea and she is a sweetie!

Buck: A MemoirBuck: A Memoir is another book that I don’t feel qualified to write a good review for, so my review is short but I will tell you this is an awesome book. Another that I couldn’t put down. It’s so out of the realm of what I normally read but I was immediately drawn into this story of a young boy trying to make his way on the streets of Philadelphia and I felt like his biggest cheerleader by the end of the book. The author is on twitter @mkasante.

So there you have it. That was way harder than I thought it was going to be. I really worry a lot that I don’t do justice to wonderful books I read by reviewing them. But I want to thank ALL of the authors I read this year for writing such great stuff.

If you want to see what else I read this year, you can visit my Goodreads page. That’s where I keep track. 🙂

Note regarding “awesome”: I promise to buy some more adjectives by next year. 😉

Renew Redo: Guest Room Lamp Update

When we moved into this house, there was a pretty solid lamp in one of the extra bedrooms. But it was seriously boring and sad looking.

Boring Lamp

It had some beading on the lamp shade but it was boring, too. Almost invisible. I felt like that poor lamp was just crying in the corner. 🙁

Beading

I also felt like the shade was a little small for a lamp of that size. So I set out to find a replacement shade. After a long search, I wasn’t finding anything close to what I wanted. I’m redoing the room in turquoise, green and white. Either the colors weren’t right or the size wasn’t right. So I decided to do it myself.

I found a plain white shade, which would brighten up the lamp (and make it all white) all by itself. It was a little bigger and a nice square shape.

New Lamp ShadeAnd I got some green ruffle ribbon and blue and green bead trim.

TrimI attached these to the lamp shade with Liquid Stitch which is pretty close to Elmer’s Glue. It was super easy to cut and paste my little project and when it was done, look at the happy difference!

Redone Lamp

I can’t tell you how much I LOVE the way it turned out! It’s going to be a great part of the total look in the room.

Here’s the before and after for you. 🙂

Before After

Happy, eh? 🙂

Pretzel Crisps!

One day last month, I was tweeting with my friend @ginidietrich when I got this tweet:

pretzelcrisp

How fun! I had never heard of Pretzel Crisps but was interested in finding out more. So I replied with my address. I spoke to my sister shortly thereafter and she told me she had seen them on the Today Show. Since I don’t watch much TV (except sports), I usually find things out via twitter.

The other day, the doorbell rang and the FedEx man had left a package. I couldn’t wait to open it up. When I did, I saw:

IMG_5045

Whoa! It looked like Pretzel Crisps sent me one of each flavor!

There were lots of savory options and even two sweet options along with two pens and two koozies.

Pretzel Crisps

Okay, the pen…

IMG_5094[1]

The pen has the ability to write either blue or red ink and it brings back fabulous childhood memories of the pens with all the colors in them. Maybe they still have pens like that but I haven’t seen one since I was a kid. I love this pen! 🙂

Back to the snacks. We both love pretzels and we decided that we’d try two different flavors. I’m a Libra so faced with so many incredible taste options was difficult for me but I chose the Chipotle Cheddar. David chose the Garlic Parmesan.

They were both delish!

I love cheese in all shapes and forms and these crisps were cheesy without leaving orange on my fingers. I loved the bite of the chipotle.

IMG_5056

The garlic parmesan were nice and garlicky. Yum.

I’m not much of a savory snacker but I’m going to have to hide these from David for sure. They are a very tasty treat and I’m looking forward to trying the sweet flavors: Peanut Butter Crunch and Dark Chocolate Crunch.

Many thanks to Pretzel Crisps for the unexpected treat! 🙂

Cooking Through a Cookbook

I’m going through my goals list (I need to write about that again) adding and subtracting and renewing it for the new year. I usually check it every six months to see if there are things that need to be removed. I always add new things as I think of them.

One of the things that’s been on my list since I first made it in December of 2012 is to cook through a cookbook. I read the book Julie and Julia and I thought that was the coolest story and thought I would like to do that someday.

Julie and Julia

Of course, when I first was thinking about it, I thought cooking, or rather baking, through a dessert cookbook would be how I would handle this particular goal. But honestly, even though that sounds like loads of fun, one of the other items on my goals list is to get the sugar out of my diet.

So…

I decided to chose the book Everyday Paleo by Sarah Fragoso. We’ve been eating a mostly paleo diet since November of 2010. Of course come the holidays, eating sugary treats becomes a slippery slope. One I’m ready to get off of and put behind me.

cookbook

I looked through the book paying special attention to things I’m kind of afraid of. In all of the paleo cookbooks I own, this book has less of those than the others. Portobello mushrooms and lamb specifically have me worried but I’ve never eaten a portobello mushroom and the only time I ever consumed lamb was when I did the Scarsdale Diet in 1980. 2 lamb chops on Tuesday if I remember correctly.

Anyway, David is not a seafood eater so I’ll have to plan those meals for when he’s out of town but I feel like this will be good fun and good food for us! 🙂

The Ghost of Christmas Past

So I really should have written this blog post a couple of weeks ago when it was happening. But since it made me so happy, I’m going to go ahead and post it now.

We haven’t had a real Christmas tree for around 10 years. The last time I put one up was in 2002 but it never got decorated. You see, I worked for the company who does the merchandise for the Outback Bowl and we worked our tails off for the month prior to the game, getting only Christmas day off. Decorating the tree just never got done.

Our place in Bartlesville wasn’t really big enough for a tree. But, a couple of years ago, David wasn’t home and I really wanted a tree. After hanging an ornament a friend gave me on the lamp, I realized, “Hey, this lamp is shaped liked a tree!” And I decorated it. 🙂

lamptreeSo this year, I was so excited to be in a big enough house with enough time to have a Christmas tree and decorate it! I waited sort of late-ish because David was out of the country and I wanted to have the whole experience with him.

We bought a beautiful, real tree. With a Detroit lean.

leanAfter a few snips, we were able to get it standing straight. It was SO much fun going through the trunk of our Christmas tree ornaments. I had forgotten exactly what we had. I decided I wanted to go with red and nutcrackers. I pulled out what we had and then we supplemented with more from the store.

radko

Then we let the Glambaby help by putting candy canes on the tree.

glambabyAnd, of course, the golden Elvis at the top. This year, I secured him to the ribbon which made him stand out even more.

elvisangel

I couldn’t have been happier with the way the tree looked after we were done decorating it. It was GORGEOUS! And happy making. 🙂

treeOne of my friends made a crack about the pine colored carpet and I agree it’s hideous. I can’t wait until we pull it up. But for Christmas? It totally worked.

I ordered stockings embroidered with our names and hung them on the mantle along with my nutcracker collection. Oh how I missed my nutcrackers!

fireplace

I added a couple of camels from our time in Bahrain.

camel

And a tiny woodland creature.

beaver

Then I found my big nutcrackers and the reindeer that Geoff made in shop class.

big

I think it all turned out great and I’m so happy we got to do it. I can’t wait for next year! 🙂

Buzzed Walking

I’m sure if you listen to the radio or watch TV at all you’ve heard the commercials about Buzzed Driving. Well, now I’m going to tell you about buzzed walking.

I’ve been living UP since June 24, 2013. That’s when, after hearing about it from my twitter friend @ginidietrich, I got my own UP band.

livingup

The UP band can record all kinds of things but I mainly use it to record my daily steps and my sleep. I’ve set a goal of 10,000 steps per day and eight hours of sleep. And I’m incredibly fascinated by the sleep data over everything else. I really love it when it shows a larger amount of time in deep sleep over light sleep. I really like it when I reach my goal. But I digress.

sleep

The sleep goal is tough to achieve consistently and I feel like I have more control over the steps. Especially since my UP teammate and friend @sallyray5 introduced me to “house walking”. This is where you do your steps walking in your house. Some days it’s super easy to get in those 10,000 steps but on days when it’s icy or I just haven’t been as active, house walking it is.

Buzzed walking is an extension of house walking. 🙂

You are able to set your UP band to buzz you (you feel the buzz on your wrist) when you’ve been sedentary for a certain portion of time which you can choose. I have mine set for 30 minutes.

idle

Now, when I’m inactive and am “buzzed”, I proceed to do buzzed walking. I go downstairs, turn on the radio, put four minutes on the kitchen timer and start walking laps around the downstairs. Easy peasy. After I’m done with the walk, I’ll drink a glass of water to add to my eight glasses of water a day goal and go back to what I’m doing.

I really like this easy way of meeting my walking and water goals. If only sleep were as easy although I think I’m close to the answer for that, too! I’ll let you know. 😉
